Me or Them?

Me or Them?
June 11  Lake George, NY to   Niagara Falls, NY

Philippians 2:2-4  …then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.  Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others more than yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others..

It was Friday night and we were discussing the ride from Lake George, NY to Niagara Falls, NY. The weather forecast was not good. They were calling for rain for a good portion of our ride.  Norm and I discussed the route we would be taking. He said he had looked at the map and there were two routes. One would be riding through the mountains on two-lane roads and one would be on the interstate highway. He also said the maps showed it would only be a matter of a short difference in the two routes. Now, we have two different takes on roads. Norm likes the curvy, mountainous roads where he can do some riding.  I especially don’t like the mountain roads and curves and rain mixed together.  I don’t mind some curves and mountain rides but for the long trip to Niagara I would prefer the interstate. I asked him if we could do half and half—half on the mountain roads and half on the interstate, and he said no it wasn’t possible. He knows all of this about me because we have been riding since 1981 together. I ended up telling him to take the roads he wanted to take (I truly meant it.) and it would be fine with me. I have to trust that he will do what’s best for us.
The next morning I still didn’t know what route we were taking. When I asked him I was surprised to find out he had chosen the highway. He is like that and has been that way our whole marriage. He is always thinking of me and what is best for me. I have often told him how unselfish he is and I wish I was more like him. I can’t begin to share the many different ways he shows how unselfish he is where I am concerned, but it really touches my heart every time.

What about you?  Who do you think about most? Are you trying to satisfy yourself and your desires or that of others? How do we get from selfish to unselfish?
1—be subject to Christ.  Be in the word and willing to follow the Word the Lord reveals to you.
2—begin looking for ways to serve others…. Sometimes this means a sacrifice to you.

For further study….. Philippians 2:5-11 We know Christ is the ultimate example of unselfishness. He gave up everything.  Find what He gave up as you read and study those verses. Strive to be like Him, knowing that only through Him can you do it.
